Toyota Steering Defect Recall Investigation
Auto maker Toyota, Inc. was served with a Federal Grand Jury subpoena regarding faulty steering relay rods in their vehicles.  In 2004 Toyota issued a recall for defective steering relay rods in Japan stating then that the recall was isolated to vehicles sold only in Japan. Later they extended the recall to the United States. Recall notices were sent to 977,000 trucks from model years 1990 to 1995.

Toyota is currently being investigated to determine whether they breached the rules regarding the timing of the recall.   Under U.S. law, car makers have five days to report any safety problems to regulators.

Under the subpoena, Toyota must submit documents to the Federal Grand Jury related to steering-related defects. Toyota has said they will cooperate with the investigation.
